After two weeks off due to holiday and then Alfie being ill, I finally got back to training. I was expecting to find it really hard, but actually I think the rest has done me good. My knee, which was playing me up before we went away, seems to have settled which is fantastic.
First day back, in honor of the cricket I was going to watch later, I decided to do Thirty30! I ran for 30 mins and then swam 30 lengths of the pool. Friday I decided to use each cardio machine for 10 minutes, and in between do stretches, or weights. I did 50 mins of cardio work and felt really good.
The run is 10 weeks today - can't believe how quickly the time is flying by. Looking forward to my training session with Jakki tomorrow - I think I really need to start stepping up my training. I've also signed up for a 6 week running course at the gym which starts on 12th July, which will focus more on strength work rather than the running itself.
Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me! It really means a lot to me knowing I have support behind me.
Until next time

Useless Blogger!
I haven't been too good at keeping up to date have I?
The running has been going really well. Jakki took me on a 45 min run outside last time she came, which was hard, but I was pleased that I managed it.
I've just come back from a week in Majorca, so its nearly two weeks since I've run. I've pulled something in my back as well, so I'm finding it hard to move around at the moment. I'm popping lots of painkillers in the hope it settles fast so I can get training again. Hoping at the very least to do some swimming.
Until next time

Day of rest
Yesterday I swam 60 lengths of the pool which took me 50 mins, although I was slowed down by others in the pool so it isn't really an accurate reflection of the time it took me. Today is a well deserved rest day!

7K!
WOW!! I decided to do my run at the gym today, and following Jakki's advice I slowed right down. Going at a much slower pace I found I was able to run for much longer. I gradually increased my pace through my run, and before I knew it I had run 7K! It took me roughly 50mins, and to be honest, there was no point where I felt I really needed to stop. In fact it was because I was running out of time before collecting Alfie that I stopped when I did. My legs had started to feel tired, and my shoulders tight, but I did feel I could have carried on and possibly managed 10k - I might try that next time!!!!!!!
Now I have to transfer treadmill running into road running! If I could carry on that pace, outside, for the full 1/2 marathon I would be looking at about 2 1/2 hours. I could live with that quite happily!
Overall I'm feeling much more positive and I think because of that, I'm eating far more sensibly too. My word, I might turn into a lean running machine yet!
Happy!

Along came the cavalry!
What a great training session I had on Monday night. Jakki came and straight away said we are going for a run. She slowed me right down and said she thought I was starting off too fast. We ran for about 10 minutes, and then she had me running intervals at lamp posts. When I got to a lamp post I had to run as fast as I could until the next one, then slow right down to little more than a fast walk, then at the next post off I had to go again! That really got the heartbeat up! In total we were out for 25 minutes, so far better that I’ve done by myself. I have to say without her pushing me I wouldn’t have done the last 5 minutes, but hey, that’s still 5 minutes longer than I’ve managed before! We then did some pad work. I really enjoy doing that – talk about getting rid of your aggression! Not sure what Alfie thought though when he walked in to see me punching a strange woman! Then we finished with crunches for my wobbly tummy!
Jakki has suggested I try to run three times a week, going slowly and gradually building up the time I’m running for. When I get home I’m to do crunches for my tummy. Then on the other days some swimming or yoga – but not to overdo it otherwise I’ll end up with an injury.
I felt so positive at the end of the session. I was ashamed to give Jakki my food diary, and the good session combined with knowing I’ve got to hand over another food diary has spurred me on to make more of an effort with my diet. No more snacking on chocolate and crisps!
With it being bank holiday next Monday, I’m seeing Jakki again in two weeks time when she wants us to go out for 40 – 45 mins (help).
I’ve noticed my shins starting to hurt a bit, so although my trainers are quite new, I think I will have to buy some good quality running shoes. I thought I would really ache this morning, but I’m not too bad.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly...........
Once again a disappointing run. I was supposed to run at a fast pace for 10 minutes. I managed about one before having to stop. So, undeterred I decided I would run for as long as I could, recover then go again, but for 15-20 mins instead. I guessed that was better than nothing. All was going well until I ran through some flies and of course managed to swallow one! Unfortunately it lodged in my throat making me cough to the point of being sick! Not really the training session I had in mind!
Thank goodness I’ve got Jakki coming tomorrow. I’m hoping she will sort my training out, my diet out and get me on the right track.
I’m still positive about the half marathon even though my two training sessions haven’t gone well so far. My aim is to get round, and if I’m the last one round then so be it! Someone has to be last and I guess it will give me a base to work on for next year!
We’ve had a lovely day. Rich, Alfie and myself went to Skegness. It poured with rain, but we had fun on the beach, and then of course had to have seaside fish and chips! Later we went to a bird reserve and enjoyed a walk in the fresh air and rain.

Oh Dear!
Well I have started my training. Day one a 15 min jog – easy! That’s what I thought anyway until I went to do it! I thought I was going to need oxygen! I came back home feeling quite miserable about the situation, until I realised that although I struggled, I did do it, I didn’t give in, so that is a positive I guess. I also realised that perhaps a bar of chocolate, bag of crisps and a can of coke wasn’t the best pre run fuel I could have had! I think a serious look at my diet is in order.
I’ve been in touch with Jakki, who I did some personal training with last summer. She is going to start a series of training sessions with me, first one being this Monday. She is great at motivating me and making me believe in myself but boy has she got her work cut out for her! She will also focus on my diet and give me hints and tips on ways I can alter it to achieve my aims.
I’ve had some wonderful feedback from everyone I’ve spoken to about running the half marathon. I’m not sure why I expected people to laugh at me, but I really thought they would. Knowing I have friends who have confidence in me achieving this goal is fantastic!

My First Post!
Welcome to my first Blog entry!
I’ve been wanting to get involved with “blogging” for some while, but have never really felt I have anything to write about – until now!
On Sunday 10th September 2006 I will be running my first half marathon - The Nottingham Robin Hood half marathon.
13.1 miles / 21.1 km
16 weeks and 4 days and counting……………
The longest race I’ve completed has been the ‘Race for life’ which is a 5k race. I did this in 2002. Since then I’ve done some treadmill running, but have never run further than 5k even then. So to run over four times that distance is going to be somewhat of a challenge for me – both physically and mentally. I find running very hard – I’m sure that is purely a mental block that I have telling me “I can’t run”. Its time I shut that little voice up!
There are many reasons why I’ve decided to do this race – some selfish, some not so……….
Firstly the selfish reasons. Through lack of exercise, and I guess coming out of a long winter, I’m feeling very sluggish, over weight and generally frumpy. I needed something to focus on to give me motivation to get off my ever spreading backside. The ever looming 40th Birthday has also got some bearing on my decision as well! I thought about running the Race for Life, but realised I wouldn’t need to train too hard to complete that, which meant I probably wouldn’t. I thought about running a 10K race, but once again, I knew that even if I didn’t run the whole course, I could at least finish it without needing too much training. A half marathon is another story! I know I can’t just turn up and run a half marathon – I need to train, and lots!! As I love my food, I’m also hoping that all the training will help me loose some weight and tone up rather than having to resort to a dieting!
And then the not so selfish reason. Many of you will either know, or will have heard me talk about our little friend Toby and what he has been through during his 3 short years. With Toby as my inspiration I intend to raise some money for CLIC Sargent along the way. Every 48 hours, 10 children are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. CLIC Sargent acts as a lifeline keeping families together when the unimaginable happens. CLIC Sargent provide clinical, psychosocial, emotional and financial services in hospital, at home and in the community across the UK as well as research into improving treatment and care. Quite honestly, with everything Toby has been through in his short life, I feel quite pathetic when I panic about the training ahead and the running of a half marathon.
Please feel free to read Toby’s story …..

Don’t worry – I will be begging for sponsorship in due course, but for now I hope you will encourage and support me and keep Sunday 10th September free to come and cheer me on!
